Bio:

Melinda Walters has a BA in sculpture, University of Louisville,  a MFA, SUNY Albany, New York and a ME.d from the University of Louisville. She worked as a Jefferson County Public Schools Special Education Teacher for 20 years. Along the way she taught art in the Secondary and Post Secondary settings. Before her work with JCPS, she worked with children and adults in community and hospital psychiatric placements. Her work has been exhibited both locally and regionally.

Statement

Copper, aluminum, steel and bronze shaped by metal smithing, casting, and fabrication processes are used to make sculptural work suggesting psychological states of mind. Figuration is used to explore movement and gesture, as well as figures caught in the stasis of the silhouette. I attempt to capture the free-wheeling ideas of creative energy informed by anxiety, ancient jewelry, anthropomorphic sentimentality, Alberto Giacometti’s lonely vulnerability and Joel Shapiro’s figurative Post-Minimalism. I chase visions in the studio. The constant shift between material, process, emotion and thought is the careening interplay of studio life I most enjoy.
