ARTIST STATEMENT
This series emerged from a body of work entitled “Insomnia” where I explored the lucid dream state and its strange company. The seemingly placid figure embodies an underlying drama of primal relationships.
Everyday objects find their way into the narrative: trees, animals and other organic flotsam. The vessel skirt form is a contemporary reliquary that holds a transformative element and traverses the boundaries of the conscious and subconscious world.
BIO
Gayle Cerlan has been an artist and teacher for more than 40 years. She has been an active member of the Kentucky arts community with her involvement as the creator and director of the CItyworks
Exhibitions, and as curator of the National Dinnerworks exhibitions. She served on the boards of the Kentucky Museum of Art and Louisville Visual Arts Association. She founded Cerlan Gallery, Lexington, KY. (1995-2007) and Peep Show Gallery, Lexington, KY. (2007-2010).
Ms. Cerlan has an extensive teaching background including teaching at St. Francis School, Ky Country Day, Waldorf Montessori, Sayre School and Indiana University Southeast – Adjunct Professor of Ceramics, Bellarmine College, and the University of Louisville, Summer Ceramic Instructor, Anderson Ranch, Snowmass, CO. She established a non-accrediated school of Fine Arts for ages for all ages, ArtStudio, Inc. (1977-currently).
Ms. Cerlan has exhibited her fine art ceramic art nationally, and internationally. She has won awards, grants, and is numerous public collections. Included are Merit award, Kentucky Arts Council, Visual Arts Project Grant, Kentucky School for the Blind, Full Scholarship Award, Louisville School of Art, and Great Meadow Grant. Collections include Kentucky Museum of Art, United State Senator McConnell, Washington, DC, Mary and Al Shand Foundation, Louisville, KY.
Gayle has a studio in Lexington, KY and has recently located her teaching school, ArtStudio to the St. Matthews Studio and Gallery at 3716 Lexington Rd., in the heart of St. Matthew, Louisville, KY.
