Bio:
Bette Levy has an undergraduate degree in experimental psychology, and two master’s degrees, one in art therapy and one in textile arts. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and conducted personal research into textiles through world-wide travel. She was the director of the Patio Gallery at the Jewish Community Center for 14 years, and a long-time member of PYRO Gallery. In addition, she was a founding member of LAFTA (Louisville Area Fiber and Textile Artists), a past member of Fiber Forum (an arm of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America), a past vice president, board member, Kentucky state representative for the Surface Design Association, and a member of numerous other textile, arts, and community organizations.
Artist Statement:
I am an artist interested in adapting historic handwork techniques to address personal and societal issues. By pairing tools with crochet, I honor various modes of production. My work contrasts men’s/women’s work, physical/sedentary, outdoor/indoor, gross/small movements. Although hand- and tool-work skills have been largely replaced by technology, by using them in my art, I want to speak to history, and respect for family and gender. I am concerned in this fast-changing contemporary world to reassert an ongoing, ever-evolving relationship with the past.
